A. Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (The Master Singers). B. Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) was originally called Gustavus III, and concerned the assassination of a Swedish King. Unfortunately, it coincided with an attempted assassination of Napoleon III by revolutionaries, so censors banned the opera. Verdi then rewrote it to change the setting to 17th century New England, and changing King Gustavus to the Governor of Boston. He then rewrote it again for the Paris premier, this time changing the location to Naples. C. The Bride of Lammermoor, by Sir Walter Scott. The first names have been italianized, but the last names remain Scottish, which explains such strange sounding names as "Enrico Ashton" or "Edgardo di Ravenswood." D. Lohengrin. Wagner wrote this opera while in a 13 year political exile in Switzerland. Franz Liszt helped promote the opera in Germany in Wagner's absence. Wagner being in political exile thus did not hear it performed for a number of years. E. Verdi's La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny). In the original version, everybody dies, including even the hero Alvaro.
